Fig-get about it

A fig tree with fruit, close up from Beverly’s Camarillo Garden.

Okay… I just couldn’t resist that title.

Figs are the first fruit I really grew in my southern California garden. They love the weather here. The aren’t ripe for long but as long as they are, I like to walk out into the garden and eat them right off the tree. The funny this is, I grew up with Fig Newtons and those are 100% gross. But figs, right off the tree?

Figs are a nutritious fruit that contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals, and may have many health benefits:

  • Digestion: Figs are high in fiber and prebiotics, which can help with constipation, diarrhea, and gut health.

  • Heart health: Figs contain potassium, which can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

  • Bone health: Figs contain calcium, potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus, which can help improve bone density and prevent osteoporosis.

  • Antioxidants: Figs contain polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties.

  • Menstrual health: Dried figs may help with period pains.

  • Inflammatory conditions: Figs may help prevent cancer cells from growing and spreading.

  • Weight management: Figs may help with post-meal satiety and blood sugar regulation.

  • Skin and hair: Figs contain zinc and iron, which can help reduce hair loss and promote new hair growth.

Is that a breast cancer list of benefits or what?

Mind you they are not a low-calorie food. But the longer I stay out in the garden the more peace I feel. So not having to go in for a snack is a plus.
