FAQs

Who is eligible?

We serve all individuals and families in the Santa Paula, Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Camarillo and Somis with a breast cancer diagnosis. Patients are eligible if they are recovering from cancer surgery, in cancer treatment, or in hospice care.

When will you expand to other cities in Ventura County?

We are currently in our launch phase and learning how to best serve our Backyard Breasties!! We plan to expand to all of Ventura County when we are confident that we have the volunteers and infrastructure to do so. Want to help us expand? Contact Us.

What is the cost?

There is no cost to the patient – our amazing nursery partners and community volunteers donate their time and services as a way of giving back to individuals and families in their communities.

What can I expect?

You can expect an introductory meeting with the patient followed by 6 or more weeks of indoor plant care, existing seedling plant care and outdoor weeding, pruning and plant care. Plus pet sitting if you have fur babies.

What plant services don’t you provide?

BB depends on local gardener volunteers and breast cancer survivors to provide the services. BB doesn’t operate heavy, powered equipment or ladders. This means, lawn mowing, tree cutting, hedge trimming, chemical use and most standard landscaper services are not provided. As BB grows we hope to develop partnerships with commercial landscapers but those service are not provided at this time.

I am a breast cancer patient, how do I apply?

We accept applications online. Please visit the Get Services page to complete an application. You will be asked to submit information such as your email, name, and address.

What if I have a special collection of plumeria/orchids/dahlias…

Let us know on the application. We will work to secure a volunteer that has expertise with your plant babies. Get Services

Can I submit an application for someone else?

Yes, we welcome applications submitted by caregivers, nurse navigators, doctors, colleagues, friends or family on behalf of patients. However, you must ask the patient first and ensure they are willing to accept the service. During the application process, we ask for patient information such as email, name, and address, so please have this information readily available.
